Permissions, Advertising and Premium Apps

On 15 November, 2011 by Eric

I will make an ad-free version of /b/tard with only internet permissions! IF, you pay for it…

For those who are wondering why /b/tard needs the permissions it does, it is for the following reason. I am a full-time app developer now, I quit my job in finance to do this. I need money.

I also want to keep /b/tard free. So it now has advertising.

MobFox and AdMob (the biggest ad networks) require the following permissions;

<uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.INTERNET”/>

<uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE”/>

<uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION”/>

<uses-permission android:name=”android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE”/>

So rest assured, I’m not accessing your data for any other reason than to get ad revenue.

If you don’t want ads and the associated permissions, please post here and if there are even two people who say they are willing to pay $3 for a premium version of /b/tard, I’ll do it.

If you are still angry, please reconsider your rating, it really does hurt me. Could you please consider the rating on the basis of what the app does, not what you perceive to have lost? I’ve made a lot of updates recently to justify taking ad revenue, I just hope the users see this value too now and for future updates.

I’ve spent a LOT of time on this app, and I really hope people appreciate that…

  • People will pay if you give them what they want. Loading a ton of unnecessary permissions onto an app that was free will not make them want to pay. Leave it the way it was and put out a paid version. There are plenty of advertising services out there that shouldn’t require the permissions you’re forcing on your users.

    • I want my users to be happy so this whole thing is upsetting.

      So do you want the ads and the permissions removed, and then pay for it?

  • I dont care about the ads. But i would pay for it nonetheless. Good Job on your app. Keep it up!
